Sure,
you may not be blatantly sinning, but is your heart filled with purity?
August’s Awakening, Day 7
Purity
of heart means to love God above all things and at the same time to see him
everywhere in all things.
—Teilhard de Chardin
My strength is as the strength of ten,
Because my heart is pure.
—Lord Alfred Tennyson
“You have heard that it was said to the
people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject
to judgment.’ But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister
will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister,
‘Raca,’ [an Aramaic derogatory term]
is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger
of the fire of hell. “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit
adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already
committed adultery with her in his heart. Matthew 5:21–22, 27–28 NIV
Purity
of heart transcends words or actions, it comprises your every thought and
desire, whether acted on or not. It is one thing to refrain from sinning, quite
another to refrain from thinking about it. Your mind is the battlefield and it
flows directly into your heart, the wellspring of your soul. Purity of heart is
taking every thought captive to be obedient to the mind of Christ, and the
switch must always be in the on position. Purity is a difficult, if not almost
impossible, attribute to maintain in this internet world, but that does not
excuse us from putting forth our best effort always to strive for and maintain
a healthy level of purity. Assuredly, a very close walk with the Holy Spirit is
essential, as your strength and ability to keep purity at the forefront can
only come from Him.
