The measuring rod of your character is
Christ Himself. How are you measuring up and what are you doing to get to His
gold standard?
July’s
Awakening, Day 31
Out of our beliefs are born deeds; out
of our deeds we form habits; out of our habits grows our character; and on our
character we build our destiny.
—Henry Hancock
What we are governs how we think, and
how we think determines how we act.
—John R. W. Stott
In
the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good
deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16 NIV
But
you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness,
faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take
hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good
confession in the presence of many witnesses. Command those who are rich in this
present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so
uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything
for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be
generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for
themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold
of the life that is truly life. 1 Timothy 6:11–12, 17–19 NIV
It
all starts with our belief system, which becomes our thoughts, thoughts become
actions and deeds, which become habits, out of which our character grows, good
or bad. It is a constant and continual process whereby we must make
adjustments, reassessments, and more tunings to become like the pinnacle of character,
Christ Himself. We must be willing to hear, heed, and follow the Holy Spirit in
all these matters. Our success or failure in life is ultimately determined by
our character and our proper assessment of self and motivation to change the
undesirables. Changes are critical, or we will never move forward in the growth
of our character. We must be able to change thought patterns, with the aid of
the Holy Spirit, to conform to the mind of Christ. His character is the
measuring rod we must use and striving in that direction must be our definitive
priority.
