A Childlike Heart, Not a Spiritual Infant

Don’t you think it’s time to leave the nest and fly into some spiritual maturity? Find the motivation to feed yourself.

August’s Awakening, Day 13

We are to be children in heart, not in understanding.

 —Thomas Aquinas
We know truth not only by reason but also by the heart, and it is from this last that we know first principles.

 —Blaise Pascal

Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly—mere infants in Christ. I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. 1 Corinthians 3:1–2 NIV

In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. Hebrews 5:12–14 NIV

At some point the infant needs to progress from mother’s milk or formula onto something solid. At some point the child needs to move into the world of education. At some point the young adult needs to leave the nest for college. And at some point the college graduate needs to settle into a career. Maturity comes with concerted effort and experience, and is not just going to happen. Remember the mother eagle? Sometimes, you just have to push the fledgling out of the nest to make it fly. Maybe God needs to give you a little push to spurn you onward and upward. He wants you to have a pure open heart like a child, but He also wants a polished and understanding mind concerning the things above. It’s time to leave the nest.
