Take life one short race at a time. Eventually
you’ll finish the journey.
July’s
Awakening, Day 3
Perseverance is not a long race; it is
many short races one after another.
—Walter Elliott
The best way out is always through.
—Robert Frost
The difference between perseverance
and obstinacy is, that one often comes from a strong will, and the other from a
strong won’t.
—Henry Ward Beecher
He
will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of
our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 1:8 NIV
The
race of life is daunting and we never know where the finish line is or when it
will come. It can certainly be helpful if we view life as a series of short
races, all being part of the big race itself. We can better manage just one
short spurt at a time and when we’ve completed one jaunt, we immediately start
the next. This helps to keep our focus forward, but not so far ahead as to miss
the importance of what we’re doing right now. Sequential is the key, one step
building upon the next, one day at a time, until ultimately, we have reached
the point to where God wants to take us. Only look back to learn from mistakes,
but don’t tarry there. Have a good sense of where you’re going and the right
direction, but don’t worry if you can’t foresee the finish line or every twist
and turn along the way. Surprises during the journey and a bit of the unknown
makes life vibrant and exciting—and isn’t that the way it should be?
