Love Is Best When Given Away

The way to be loved is to give love away.

February’s Awakening, Day 9

We can do no great things; only small things with great love.

 —Mother Teresa

Love sought is good, but given unsought is better.

 —William Shakespeare, “Twelfth Night”

Love seeks not to possess, but to be possessed.

 —R. H. Benson

This is the miracle that happens every time to those who really love; the more they give, the more they possess.

 —Rainer Maria Rilke

May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you. 1 Thessalonians 3:12 NIV

Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

1 John 3:18 NIV

We all want to be loved as that is essential to our human existence, and in fact, our God-designed nature is to love and be loved. It should be self-evident that to be loved we must willingly love. The best way to receive the love of others is to love freely and unconditionally without expectations. It is when we put constraints on the love we give that we become disgruntled at the love we receive. If we love without constraints or expectations then the love we receive is all the more significant and valuable, because we know it was not coerced or out of obligation that we received it. Let your love be a free gift with no restrictions, constraints, expiration date, or expectations. Doing so will free yourself and allow others to freely love you. The true language of love is the language of the love on the Cross.
